The UN Secretary-General António Guterres Wrote to GEIDCO

Commending and supporting the progress and efforts for establishing Global Energy Interconnection

Recently, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres wrote to Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), appraising the progress and plans of establishing Global Energy Interconnection, for which GEIDCO has worked tirelessly to design and promote. As he pointed out in the letter, “organizing the global transition to clean and affordable energy is one of my priorities as it is the only way we will achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals.” He appreciated GEIDCO’s contribution to this major undertaking as we work to accelerate clean energy deployment globally.

On September 26, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) Initiative at the UN Sustainable Development Summit, offering China’s solution to global challenges such as climate and environmental crisis, environmental pollution and resource scarcity, and to facilitating the world energy transition and sustainable development.

Since its proposal, the GEI Initiative has received high acclaims and extensive responses from the United Nations, related countries, institutions and enterprises. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has participated in conferences hosted by GEIDCO, during which he remarked that GEI is the key to realizing inclusive and sustainable growth worldwide. By now, GEIDCO has established close cooperation with the UN headquarters and all its regional commissions, as well as the secretariat of the UNFCCC, the UNEP, the UNESCO, the UN-OHRLLS, the World Meteorological Organization, with the latter GEIDCO has jointly conducted researches. GEI has been brought into the frameworks for advancing the UN 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, global environmental governance, and electricity access and health and poverty issues. For the three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020, GEI was included in Policy Briefs for the UN High-level Political Forum.

In recent years, GEIDCO has been rigorously advancing the GEI Initiative and promoting concept dissemination, planning and research, international cooperation and project implementation. Up to now, GEIDCO has released more than 50 research findings, including Global and Continental Energy Interconnection Research and Outlook report series, Global and Continental Renewable Energy Development and Investment report series and Resolving the Crisis, covering energy, economy, society, environment and other fields. As a result, theoretical frameworks such as “two replacements”, “Energy, Transportation and Information Networks Integration (ETI Integration)”, “co-development of electricity, mining, metallurgy, manufacturing and trade” have taken shape. The top-level design of energy Interconnection and clean energy development schemes for the world, continents and key regions have been complete. A global working system has been formed, consisting of the headquarters, regional offices, national representative offices, and regional and national committees. Four professional alliances are established, namely, the GEI financial, equipment, university, and think tank alliances. In addition, GEIDCO co-initiated the African Energy Interconnection and Sustainable Development Alliance (AEISDA) with the government of Guinea. Altogether, GEIDCO has established cooperative relationships with the governments and relevant enterprises and institutions from more than 100 countries across the world. The number of GEIDCO members has reached 1,115, covering 130 countries. GEI has become a part of the “Belt and Road” development, China-Arab States cooperation, and China-Africa cooperation. GEIDCO also facilitated the progress in a number of power interconnection projects such as China-South Korea, China-Myanmar-Bangladesh and Ethiopia-Gulf countries.
