10 July 2024: The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has been selected as a finalist for the International Green Gown Awards for its “Net Zero Campus Initiative: A Leap Towards Sustainable Climate Action” project under the 2030 climate action category. Supported by the UN Environment Programme and in association with Allianz Global Investors, the award celebrates innovative and impactful sustainability initiatives in the further and higher education sectors worldwide.
AIT is among the 95 finalists representing 61 institutions from 28 countries across 8 categories. As part of the preparation process, AIT is advancing to stage 2 submission, competing with other outstanding sustainable and innovative projects in the global education sector.
Renowned for its lush green campus, AIT aims to achieve Net Zero status by 2030 and promote the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy, focusing on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions utilizing natural ecosystems. This initiative includes projects such as extensive solar panel installations, comprehensive energy efficiency and waste recycling programs, nature based solutions, and other research initiatives dedicated to sustainability.
The project aims to foster AIT towards sustainability by integrating economic, environmental, and social values into its operations, transforming the campus into a low-carbon, resource-recycling, renewable energy-powered educational hub. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on prioritizing ecosystems, biodiversity, and the coexistence of nature and human activities.
The Net Zero Botanical Garden Campus serves as a hub for educators, researchers, public and private sector partnerships, social enterprises, start-ups, responsible investments to collaborate with AIT utilizing its BOI status for an inclusive innovation fostering prudent contribution to sustainability of future generations . The initiative also fosters collaborative efforts between AIT and its partners to embark on a journey towards generating positive change with impactful projects.
