The Egyptian Government has unveiled its National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, in which the country aims to take a share of about 8% of the global market by 2040 by producing 5.6 Mt/year of hydrogen for export under a US$60bn investment.
The strategy envisages a phased approach which includes pilot projects in the 2020s followed by a scale-up phase in the 2030s to reach a gigawatt scale. The third phase (2040s) plans to use hydrogen across society to support decarbonisation in industry and transport.
In May 2023, the Egyptian Council of Ministers had approved the creation of the National Council for Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives, which aims to unify the country’s efforts to stimulate investment in the field of green hydrogen in order to become a hydrogen hub in the future.
