The Australian mining group Fortescue has submitted its 644 MW Turner River Solar Hub plans for approval to Western Australia’s Environmental Planning Authority (EPA) (Australia). The company plans to develop a 644 MW solar power plant about 120 km south of Port Hedland, within the Kariyarra Native Title determination area, in Western Australia’s Pilbara region to power its iron ore mining operations.
The Proposal comprises the installation of solar panels, substation, and 220 kV transmission line spurs connecting the proposal solar plant to Fortescue’s existing Pilbara Energy Connect (PEC) transmission system. The proposal also includes supporting infrastructure.
In 2023, solar represented about 16% of Australia’s power generation. Australia aims to achieve 82% of electricity generated from renewable sources by 2030.
