Meihuajing Mine, operated by CHN Energy Ningxia Coal Industry, has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable development with its innovative coal gangue project. On February 27, the first batch of eco-friendly bricks, made from processed coal mining byproduct, rolled off the production line at a dedicated factory located near the mine. This achievement marks a successful transition from waste material to valuable product.
The Yuanyanghu mining area, where Meihuajing Mine is located, has implemented a comprehensive approach to coal gangue utilization. This includes using the material for backfilling subsided land, reclaiming land, constructing roadbeds and, most notably, producing eco-friendly bricks. In partnership with Yanchi County, the mine launched the 100 Million Eco-bricks Project in 2023. By 2024, the project had already consumed 73,000 tons of coal gangue, and aims to utilize 100,000 tons in 2025.
The positive impact on the local community is evident. According to Gaoshawo Town resident Ma Youtian, the brick factory, equipped with advanced technology and extensive sales networks, has significantly increased local incomes. Coal gangue separated at the Meihuajing Coal Washing Plant is transported to the factory, which boasts an annual production capacity of 120 million bricks. This initiative not only reduces waste disposal costs and alleviates pressure on landfill space but also fuels regional economic growth and fosters stronger community-industry ties.
Meihuajing Mine's commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond brick production. The mine has implemented a "rock excavation reduction" technique to minimize coal gangue generation at the source by curbing unnecessary tunneling and rock fragmentation. Furthermore, a former gangue disposal site has been transformed into a vibrant green space, demonstrating the mine's dedication to ecological restoration. Guided by an environmental philosophy of source reduction, process control, safe disposal and land revitalization, the mine continues to expand its environmental initiatives through land reclamation and afforestation, firmly aligning with its ecology-first development vision.
